Giving up my iPod for a Walkman



When the Sony Walkman was launched, 30 years ago this week, it started a revolution in portable music. But how does it compare with its digital successors? The Magazine invited 13-year-old Scott Campbell to swap his iPod for a Walkman for a week.

My dad had told me it was the iPod of its day.

He had told me it was big, but I hadn't realised he meant THAT big. It was the size of a small book.

Anyone here willing to do this as an experiment?!

On my current iPod, I carry about 11.8 days worth of music, that's 283.2 hours, which would fit onto 142 cassette tapes minimum, assuming that each side could hold about an hour of music. If I carried all those cassettes with me, without cases they'd be about 1.43 ounces each, or 203.06 ounces total, about 12.7lbs.

12.7lbs to lug around what my 6oz iPod can do. No thanks.

I have a Walkman! Love it, too. Not all of them were huge, though.
They actually made models that were as small as the cassette itself. That's
pretty damn small. This guy had an old old model, though. I actually think it may
be the first one released in 1979 or one from the very early 80's. Those 'noises' he heard
could have easily been fixed by moving a magnet back and forth, side to side, in front of the
tape head and cleaning the rubber wheel piece with alcohol and a q-tip. My Walkman is from '88
and the battery life is GREAT. You can listen to it all day and still wouldn't be dead. This guy had one in not-so-good condition. While I love listening to the Walkman to listen to 80's music, it, of course, can't beat digital. Sony Walkman MP3 Player.

Analogue pwns digital any day, its just a bitch to carry around.

My mom called my mp4 player a Walkman one day when I was leaving out the door to catch the bus. How does a slim cheap piece of plastic even look like those dinosaurs?

I never had a Walkman luckily, INSTEAD I HAD A BARBIE KARAOKE MACHINE THAT PLAYED CASSETTES.

Yeah, your right. The only reason digital is better is because
you can just hold a ton of songs besides just 12 songs on one cassette.
That's about it. Analogue beats out pretty much anything digital. Like
the sound of vinyl is actually way better than CDs. And if you want to go further,
film is better than a digital picture.

I remember having a Walkman (not the walkman brand of course, those were too expensive for us!) when I was growing up (as well as a record player). Carried it everywhere with me. Even after they came out with portable CD players I still used my walkman because I couldnt afford a CD player, let alone any CDs.

Ever watch the videos Admin posted in the "What you outta know" topic? Yeah, I was one of those kids sitting next to the radio waiting for my favorite song to come on so I could hit record real fast.

I remember my walkman eating many of tapes, many of batteries, and my headphones were always breaking (although not the walkmans fault obviously lol).

Needless to say, I prefer both my phones music player and my MP3 player over the walkmans I grew up with lol. This was a fun trip back in time though lol

Why the hell are they acting like that walkman is an ancient relic dug up from some ancient dig? I remember having one when I was little, it's not THAT old. Maybe like 12 yrs. How the hell did that become ANCIENT and worthy of a magazine article?

I actually just switched from my iPod nano to a walkman mobile phone. I'm wishing i had my iPod back. The user inter face is much like the ps3's xmb but really god Damn slow. Plus it doesn't have genius. Or anything close to coverflow or the thin form factor. And it doesn't have a 3.5 mill headphone jack so i have to use i huge adaptor. It is however nice to only carry 1 device around rather then 2. I miss my iPod and prefer it over my walkman anyday. And the walkman cassette player s a relic because you can't buy most records on cassette. And no where sells them anymore.

Yeah, really! I mean, they even still had cassettes in the late 90's.
They're not that old.
