66-year-old woman becomes Britain's oldest new mother

Original story is here.

Woman of 66 becomes Britain's oldest mother
A woman of 66 has become Britain's oldest mother after giving birth to a baby boy.

Elizabeth Adeney and her newborn son, who weighed 5lb 3oz, are said to be doing "extremely well" in hospital.

The child was delivered by caesarean section on Tuesday afternoon. Doctors are understood to have brought the procedure forward because Mrs Adeney had developed a complication.

Mrs Adeney becomes the UK's oldest mother by four years, overtaking Patti Farrant who had a son, Jude, at the age of 62 three years ago.

Mrs Adeney travelled to Ukraine for IVF treatment as clinics in the UK refuse to treat women over 50 and the NHS does not recommend fertility treatment for the over-40s.

I have to admit that I am feeling more repulsed by this woman than happy for her. My thinking is that if doctors in the UK refused her IVF treatment because she is over 50 then it must be for a good reason... Remember, the story says fertility treatment for women past their 40s are not recommended... This lady has exceeded those by over a decade!

So what do you all think? Irresponsible? Determined?

Irresponsible! This is almost as bad as young mothers (but not QUITE as stupid). She may have the emotional capacity that young mothers don't have, and definitely the experience, and MOST definitely the finances, but she'll be lucky to live to see her kid graduate from college. But at least with an older mom he will more likely be able to afford it!

When she hits 70, she is not going to want to be chasing after a toddler. She just won't have it in her anymore. But who knows, there are exceptions to every rule, and I can only hope she's one of them. It does annoy me that she took the risk (HIGH risk at that) of having an unhealthy baby. That would lead to the down syndrome thread all over again though, and I really don't need to see that topic coming up.

Hmm, what's worse, teenage mothers or mom with arthritus who will probably not be alive by the time you graduate high school?

I'm also wondering about the actual health of the kid.

Sure, it's nice to be given life but this gal better have a replacement parent in mind. That is just the reality.

I have a friend whose parents were 31 years apart. Her father was the older one. He lasted until we were out of high school. Actually, he could have lived longer but he had been smoking since he was 12 so that considerably shortened his life. I guess she's not really messed up too much as a result but it's selfish to purposely have a kid at such a relatively old age. You know you won't be there.

You know, if she is too old for her body to have a child (at 66 she HAS to have gone through menopause already) and the docs are saying its a no-go and you go WAY out of your way to do it anyways....its more like a rebelious "I can do it and you cant stop me!" act instead of a wanting to be a mother act. She was irresponsible for doing this. I understand she wants to be a mom, alot of women want that, but she should have done it earlier in life. There were alot of risks to the baby and herself by doing it this way. Why didnt she adopt? Maybe because they turned her down due to age? Well, there is a reason for that as well. What happens when she dies? Does she have anyone that will be there to take care of the child? Not to mention it should be someone who is close to the child so that when the child is grieving over the death of his mother they can help him through it and know what he is going through. I mean seriously, 66? Thats just being stupid.

Yeah, I'm not sure what her need here was. Having a kid or being a rebel.

A lot of times, the want for a child can be quelled by getting a dog/ other critter. She should have tried that. I wonder if she has any pets. . ?
