750 lb. woman's body dragged away and hauled off to the morgue on a flat-bed tow truck

The boyfriend, son and neighbors of the woman are upset over how this was handled... The deceased woman's boyfriend was quoted as saying "I think they should have handled it differently, putting her on a flatbed like they did. That was like putting a cow up there." Uh... Yes. Yes it is. Seriously though... I can understand why they are upset. Though 750 pounds is a lot of woman. I'm not sure there is any way to get the job done while keeping everyone happy with how it happens.

Original story and news video is here.

Obese Woman Dragged From Home, Hauled Away After Death

The Marion County Coroner's Office has come under fire after it was revealed that an obese woman was dragged from her home and hauled away on a trailer in front of family members following her death.

Teresa Smith, 48, who weighed 750 pounds, died Tuesday in her apartment on Indianapolis' northeast side.

...

Smith's boyfriend and the couple's 13-year-old son, along with several neighbors, watched as Smith's body, still on her mattress, was dragged across the courtyard of the apartment complex, strapped down on the wrecker and covered with a piece of carpet.

"He said that fire and medical personnel have equipment available for handling patients up to 1,000 pounds and that moving obese individuals is not all that rare of an occurrence." Now that is depressing.

On a related note, did anyone go through and read the comments? What's most amusing about them is how everyone sort of reveals a bit of themselves in what they say. Here are is a snippet from the conversation:

While I agree this was done in a less-tactful manner, It's hard to respect someone when they clearly had no respect for themselves. What self-respecting individual lets themselves get up to 750 lbs, especially when you have a young son to raise?

That's an awful thing to say. We all are created equal....no one is better than anyone else. You don't know what was going on in that poor lady's life. Don't criticize others, lest you be criticized.

you sound fat

I love this. I guess I can't judge a murderer because I've never killed anyone. And, certainly, nobody can voice an opinion against abortion because none of us (hopefully) have been aborted. Sheesh. Of *course* we can voice an opinion about this: This woman was morbidly obese. She was too fat for conventional removal means. The coroner did the best they could under the circumstances. Don't like it? Get off your fat rear-ends and lose some weight.

Overactive pituitary gland anyone?? This controls your growth up and out. Sometimes people can actually have a condition where you can eat small salads every single day and your body retains water and all the calories you eat. Bottom line is she could be obese via disease.

Pituitary controls growth....thyroid controls metabolism.....read a book

Anybody who says that being "that overweight" is a medical condition, is just a fat person. There is probably cheet-o's dust on their keyboard.

Anyway, I'll leave it at that for now. It's interesting to see the drawn out arguments for and against obesity. Clearly those defending it are totally clueless, as is apparent in their comments.

I think that it sucks that they had to move her like that, but if no one had a better option then why are people flipping out? I didnt hear the family giving any ideas or offering to bring the body down there via escort in their own car! I do agree that it was disrespectful to throw a dirty carpet over her, there are tons of blankets big enough to cover a woman of that size, and they chose not to use it. As for the truck? Whats the difference between being hauled off in a truck or having the fire department come out and make lots of noise and remove her from the home and then put her in an ambulance or something? I would chose the truck, alot less attention will be drawn to the situation that way.

All in all, I can see why the family is mad but what had to be done was done and there is nothing that can be done to change it now. They need to move on, have the funeral, and work on regaining normalcy in their lives.
