Growing up in a western culture it is hard for me to really comprehend the class/caste systems of others. This story talks about a man who pleaded to marry a woman from a different class for two years... The family wouldn't allow it so he took matters into his own hands.

Original story is here.

Family axes wedding plans, Egyptian cuts off penis

A 25-year-old Egyptian man cut off his own penis to spite his family after he was refused permission to marry a girl from a lower class family, police reported Sunday.

After unsuccessfully petitioning his father for two years to marry the girl, the man heated up a knife and sliced off his reproductive organ, said a police official.

The young man came from a prominent family in the southern Egyptian province of Qena, one of Egypt's poorest and most conservative areas that is also home to the famed ancient Egyptian ruins of Luxor.

I can and cant understand it. I know the family wants whats best for him and wants him to marry someone who is used to the same lifestyle as him and stuff, but I dont understand why they wouldnt let him marry the woman he loves, knowing the consequences and how things will go, even after he petitioned for 2 years to do so. It sucks, he didnt need to cut off his penis to make a point, but maybe he wants to make it blantantly obvious he wouldnt settle for someone else?

For Middle Easterners, culture is everything. It is safe to say, they live for the opinions of others. No, more so than it is here in the Western World. Over there, the person's own desires, needs and feelings come second to reputation and the expectations of the society. This is the reason they could not have allowed him to marry a girl of a lower class. It would be like taking social suicide as a family if they did. They would share the burden of shame and so would their descendants.

On nerdy terms, Middle Eastern culture = Klingons.
