Most wards in the UK keep patients with highly infectious diseases isolated or separated from the general wards where folks are waiting to undergo surgery for minor ailments, etc.
I don't think it was her fellow patients that worried her at all.
I'm not sure how significant the situation might be in North America - but in the UK we have a real problem in almost all our hospitals with "Hospital Acquired Infections" - particularly MRSA and C.difficile - which are resistant to most forms of treatment (probably thanks to our overuse of anti-biotics).
I think she was over reacting a little about the curtains and radiators - but it is clearly bad hygiene not to clean the taps on a sink that is used by everyone in the hospital ward.
To be honest, it is getting to the stage where people due to be admitted to hospital are more concerned about hospital acquired infections than some "trifling" op on their knee! :p
